There are rugs, and then there are rugs. One kind of rug that falls into the second category is Oriental rugs. These are large area rugs that have a very colorful and highly symmetrical pattern. There are motifs that show up on the rugs which can be used to help pinpoint exactly where it was made.
Fine Oriental rugs are traditionally hand-made, though there are now some that are made on electric looms coming from the same areas. The more expensive a rug is the more likely it is hand-made. The rugs made by hand are hand-knotted with pile. If they are woven they will not have a pile.
Authentic rugs are made in a number of countries. The region runs from Cyprus to China and the Caucasus to India. The best ones have always come from Persia, or modern day Iran, but other rug producing areas have been catching up in recent years.
There are also Oriental style rugs. These are the ones that are made on machines in other places. They are made with patterns and colors that are similar to those found in the traditional rugs.
When buying fine Oriental rugs there are a lot of things to think about. Keeping these things in mind makes it easier to find the right one for any house.
The first thing think about is colors. The best way to buy Oriental rugs is to get them first and then match the furniture to them. Most have plenty of colors so it’s easy to find furniture to match. But not everyone can do that. If a person is trying to match a rug to already existing furniture it will take more time to find the right rug. Good rugs will appreciate in cost, depending on their wear and tear, but one thing that will keep their value low is odd color choices. Staying with traditional or classic colors will allow their value to go up.
Once a person has the color scheme set, it’s time to find the right size rugs. Fine Oriental rugs come in all sizes, including as runners for stairs. The best way to make sure that a person gets the right size for their room is to first draw out a diagram. This diagram should be as accurate as possible, with all the wall measurements and the furniture measurements so the buyer knows how much space they need to fill.
When people start looking for Oriental rugs they get told to count the knots per inch, and only buy from one country or another. But, that isn’t as important as some people make it out to be. It’s more important to make sure that the weave is tight, the colors are sharp and the pattern is symmetrical. It used to be that the very best rugs came from Iran, but that is slowly changing.
Finding a good rug doesn’t have to be difficult. There are Oriental rugs that will work into many budgets.
